Braid Test Results
The following tests were done in Tampa, Florida by Aquaholik. RCW’s compilation started on the 4th quarter of 2016. The results of the tests shows that we are well within paulusfishing‘s tests results margin of error. The only difference is how the diameter of the line is measured.
Diameter of the line is computed by Density = Mass ÷ Volume. Density of braid is a known value based on Honeywell’s website. The line is then weigh to get the mass. Once we know the mass, we can then compute for volume. And once we get the volume, we can easily get the diameter of the braid since volume is equal to pi times radius square times the height.
(What’s amazing is that our results is generally within 5 percents of Paulus’s results, all without actually measuring the line’s thickness. In fact our result is what you get when you try to squeeze the braid into a perfect cylinder whereas Paulus just average the line’s width and height since braid is flat when you try to measure them.)
S/W is an indication of the quality of the line. A high S/W means the line has a good strength to diameter ratio. It’s a ratio of the ABS of the line and the mass of the line per ft. Therefore, it is a strength to weight ratio.
To test the line a 10 ft section is measured. Then as straight as possible without introducing any twist, the line is loaded in the tester and test the ABS. The two section of broken line is then coiled and weigh on a precision scale. It is then divided by 10ft to get the line’s mass per ft.
FINS 40G 45# test
Got a 44ft samples of Fins 40G 45 lbs test as well as two PR knots from RCW.

By look and by feel, the Fins 40G in 45lbs test is thinner. I cut a small piece and dunk it under water and it floats back up. So it doesn’t sink which means that it’s density can be no greater than water which is 1gr/ cubic cm. JBraid 40lbs has a mass of 29.6 mg/ft. I weigh all 44ft of Fins 40G 45lbs and divided by 44 to get a mass of 27.5 mg/ft.
So we have:
JBraid 40lbs : 29.6 mg/ft —> .381 mm line diameter
Fins 40G 45lbs : 27.5 mg/ft—–> .367 mm line diameter.
Fins list this line diameter at .229 mm. Even if Fins 40 G45 lbs has a density of 1g/cubic cm, it’s diameter would be at least .341 mm.
So I did an initial ABS twist. And this is where I run into trouble. Using a 10ft section, I had to twist the line on to the two holding pins which gradually increases the tension until we get to the big 2 bollards.
Twisting it 8 times means the twist travels down the line 8 times. And another 8 times add 8 more until we get to the PVC bollards. As careful as I was, I can still feel a slight bump from the twisted line that did not unwind completely. I went and tested it anyway not sure how much the twist would diminish the strength. I got 44.80lbs, which is not remarkable considering the mass and Fins claim that it’s average unknotted strength is 61 lbs.
Let’s test the PR and this will confirm or denied my initial ABS test due to twist affecting the line strength. At 52.5lbs, the PR knot still did not break but the scale went no further. This indicates slippage either at the knot or where the line was wound around the metal pins and held with just a rubber band since the tension at the end of both metal pins are minuscule due to the number of turns.
I examined the knot and sure enough, it started to unravel. I took a video and then a screen shot: At 52.50lbs
I continued the video and continued to crank the handle and made slow progress with the knot gradually slipping but I got it to break at 56.50lbs. The knot eventually broke. This invalidate my initial ABS test and showed that twist can seriously affect the line strength.
So now I have to change my method of ABS line testing. I moved the bollards about closer to about 18 inches apart. I then started at the mid section of the 10 ft samples. I laid a perfectly straight 18 inch section across the bollard and carefully wound it one time on each bollard. Now we have the twist moving toward the ends and not at the middle of the line where the tension is the highest. It was a success. I took a video of it and the line broke at 60.50lbs. Bravo FINS, you actually did not lie about the ABS!
So we have SW of 60.50/27.50 = 2.20, remarkable indeed. And with a PR knot strength of 94%, the PR is indeed the king of all knots.

Ok, PR knot take two. Might as well test the other sample that was tied. After carefully loading the knot by loading a straight and kink free mid section first, I was confident that the test will be as good as the first results of 56.50lbs.

While unwinding the last 25 ft from the tight coil that I had formed, I ran into issues where the line would not unwind smoothly. I get bumps that ultimately reduced the ABS by 25 % as shown by the first initial ABS test.

Maxcuatro 30#, 40#, 50# and Jerry Brown blue 30# solid
The 30# maxcuatro braid has a remarkable S/W ratio of 2.44, the highest I’ve seen and I did two tests to confirm it. The line looks pretty ordinary, like Spiderwire Stealth or Stren Super Braid in 10 lbs but it is about 20% thicker. Line is shown PR knot to 80 lbs leader and next to JBraid in 10 lbs.

That gives me an average S/W of 42.88lbs/17.60 mg ft = 2.44 , well above the good average of 2.0
One FG knot test at 34.65/42.88 = 81 %
One PR knot test at 37.90/42.88 = 88 %
Basically this line has the same FG knot strength as 30lbs Suffix 832 but it is 20% thinner in diameter. The 40# maxcuatro and 50# maxcuatro is almost the same line in diameter and strength:
40# maxcuatro has an ABS of 58.80 and a line mass of 24.90 mg/ft for an S/W of 2.36, again, exceptional
50# maxcuatro has an ABS of 59.90 and a line mass of 25.60 mg /ft for and S/W of 2.3.
I weigh a 5ft section of the 40# maxcuatro again and got 125 mg/5ft = 25.0 mg/ft so maybe you did sent the same line. Did two tests on 40 lbs Maxcuatro. Shorter PR yielded 87%. Longer PR yielded 92%. Line is breaking deep inside the knot both time. Not the mainline failure that you get with 100 % PR knot.So the smooth texture line does better on the PR knot than the rougher surface. FG knot test in 40lbs is even worst. Two tests at 36-37lbs, only 62% knot strength. FG knot with bobbin finish brought it up to 41lbs, still bad at 70%. So this line does not have good knot strength.

Okay first up is J braid High Vis Green in 20 lbs
This sample from RCW has a mass of 17.90 mg/ft, making it almost the same as my sample of moss green J Braid 20 lbs test which has a mass of 17.50 mg/ft.
This sample has:
mass 17.90 mg/ft —-> diameter = .0117 in or .296 mm
ABS (32.15, 31.90) of 32.03 lbs
FG test 1 : 29.60lbs (15 wraps, 10 alternating half hitches, then tighten)
FG test 2 : 30.25lbs (16 wraps, 10 alternating half hitches, then tighten)
FG test 3 : 31.50lbs (16 wraps, one half hitches, tighten, then 9 more alternating half hitches)
I thought I found a better way to tie a stronger FG knot by not tightening until the end to keep the wraps tight but it did not matter as the above test shows.
I was surprised by the high result of the first FG knot so I did a video on the second and third test:

Daiwa JBraid 30 lbs PR knot test
Only 39.70lbs. I need to work on my PR knot and make sure that it’s not my technique that is the problem. Loosely wrap spaced out then followed by medium tension close wrap, then a high tension overwrap over everything. For the finish, one half hitch, dowel tighten, then 24 alternating half hitches followed by 4 turn reverse uni finish. I thought the PR looked good. It did not slip but the result of 76 % is pretty low for a PR knot.
I need to back off the tension on the bobbin. I think I’m making it too tight for fear of slippage.

Good FG knot strength but you might as well use 30 lbs J Braid since it’s thinner and has a better ABS (but 10% less FG knot strength).
Fins 40G 25lbs
From the Fins website, this line has an ABS of 42 lbs and a diameter of .008 inches. From our previous testing, we can say with confidence that their ABS estimate is dead on. 15lbs did indeed breaks around 26lbs and the 40lbs did indeed break at 61 lbs. Their published diameter however, is way under the actual diameter. We found the actual diameter to be 50% greater than the listed diameter.
We test the ABS twice and got 39.80 lbs and 41.25lbs for an average of 40.53lbs. The video evidences are below. So Fins is dead on again in their estimate of ABS of 42lbs and I’m sure that they use IGFA equipment to test their line and arrive at that number. What does this mean for us? It means that the home made equipment used in this thread is within 3% of the IGFA equipment!

To put this in perspective, the JBraid 30 lbs is 3 times cheaper and it is smaller in diameter and has an ABS greater than 50lbs for the metered and HV green version. Yes, better S/D ratio at 1/3 the price.
PR knot test 34lbs / 40.53 = 83.90 %. Note the line broke before the knot. This usually indicates 100% knot strength but what happened is that the twist use to create the PR weakens the mainline just before the knot. That section is twisted heavily when you form a PR.

Line mass 44.40 —-> diameter = .0184 in = .466 mm
At first analysis, this line falls into the theory that it’s expensive for manufacturer to use good spectra material in the higher lb test since they are basically charging just a little bit more per yds whether it’s 10 lbs or 65lbs but they are using 3-4 times the materials. So for the higher lbs test, it makes more economical sense for manufacturer to use a cheaper grade of spectra.
I was able to redeem my PR knot skill. This time I made sure that the bobbin is not spinning around twisting the braid unnecessary. I was able to achieve 67.50/70.80 = 96% PR knot strength.
But the real surprise was the FG knot strength. An astonishing 65.10/70.80 = 92% knot strength. That is unheard of for line class whose ABS is 70lbs. To put this in perspective, the previous best FG knot strength in the 70lbs line class was Berkeley Pro Braids 50lbs (55.10/71.90 = 77%).

Power Pro 65lbs FG knot strength = 43.95/80.20 = 55%
This is the third time in a row that JBraid (20, 40, and 65lbs) with lower than average S/W ratio (below 1.80), performs extremely well with FG knot, whereas the 30lbs , which has very high S/W > 2.4, has FG knot strength in the 70% category.
So if you are jigging offshore and use FG knot exclusively, you might want to compare FG knot strength/line diameter when making your decision because the strongest line doesn’t always have the strongest knot strength.
JBraid in 65lbs is about the same thickness as Power Pro 65lbs. It is 10 lbs weaker in ABS but it has an FG knot strength that is 21lbs better!
Spiderwire Ultracast Invisibraid 20lbs
Similar strength and diameter to JBraid 30lbs and similar FG knot strength. 30lbs JBraid is slightly thinner and stronger but Spiderwire Ultracast Invisibraid 20lbs has a pound or two better FG knot strength.

We are going to compare Saltiga boat braid VS J braid, test the ABS and KBS of power pro in most sizes and colors including Super Slick and Maxcuatro, and complete our Suffix 832 testings. There’s even JB Hollow and Tasline from down under.
The Tasline we tested was such a disappointment based on Paulus’ results and the advertise diameter to strength ratio used by dealers in Australia and New Zealand.
Below is an exlanation of why Paulus’ diameter is not correct.
Now I will explain why his diameter for the lower lb test can not be correct. When you double the diameter, you increase the volume 4 times. That mean the strength is also increased 4 times. Put 4 strand of 10 lbs braid on the machine and test it and it will break at 4 times the strength of the single strand. Reweave those 4 strands into a single strand and you will find that the diameter just doubled. Look at his chart and my chart. Increasing the diameter 1.4 times and the strength also double.
Now look at the diameter of the thinner tasline. Take that and look for one that is 1.4 times or twice the thickness and see if the strength increase twice or 4 times. It doesn’t.
Also all spectra and dyneema must have a density no greater than .97 . That means for tasline to have such a small diameter, it must have a similar corresponding mass. There is no easy around that. The line floats. So it’s density is not greater than 1. Based on the mass and his ABS, the S/W is greater than 2.8. That exceeds the property of spectra! See the 360 tuna thread on strength of fishing line material. So you see, the diameter measurement for the smaller test can not be possible. It violates all known property of spectra.
Paulus’ or Paulus’ friend set the record straight with regards to our testing.
This is Tasline Elite White, the latest incarnation of the Tasline braids. Yes, the fact that manufacturers can change the fibres, the factory where the braid is woven, and the weaving process but still call the line by the same name is highly disconcerting. Paul does not recall testing this braid, so it will be very interesting to see if it stacks up against his original. One good thing from all this testing is that at least anglers now have an idea of what they are getting in terms of actual ultimate strength (breaking strain).
Paulus then tested the new tasline and this is what he said
Tasline Elite White 30 lb (From Busted Fishing) = ultimate load = 41.46 lbs. So this would appear to be not the same line as the Tasline Original, and the quoted ultimate load is too high (by 18%). This confirms your results.
FG knot with 16 wraps, 7-wrap Rizutto finish, 45lb Schneider clear line, and 30lb Tasline Elite White = 30.75 lb (74.8%). Your FG knots must be slightly better than mine, though we only tested one case.
Basically, Paulus wants Tasline and its dealers to stop using his website and his results to market the new tasline
I believe that Paul has contacted Busted Fishing to ask that all references to his Just Fishing website and the Paulus braid test results be removed from their website and sales literature. He feels that the Tasline Elite White braids are not the same lines as the original All White braids (whose test results are given on his website) since, after initial testing, they are showing considerably lower breaking loads.

The Power Pro Super Slick samples we received was fairly consistent line that is just average or below average in term of S/W ratio. The 40 lbs Super Slick Blue is a bad sample with high variability: 38.40/25.5 mg/ft, 44.70/27.1 mg ft, and 41.90/26.0 mg/ft. That is an indication of a bad weave and bad material. The 40 lb Super Slick in green also have bad S/W.
The 50 lbs SS blue also has high variability : 63.10/ 34.10 mg/ft, and 56.90/31.70 mg/ft .
The 30 lbs Super Slick in blue is much better at 46.10 lbs/22.20 mg/ft. So it might be a crap shoot which line you will get. The 30 lbs line is stronger and thinner than the 40 lbs version. The 10 lbs Super Slick in green is a disappointment with an S/W of 1.66 —- 20.53lbs/12.40 mg/ft. The 65 lbs Super Slick in green is actually very good with and S/W of 2.12 —->87.10 lbs/41.10 mg/ft.

We received Yozuri samples from Chris Brown regional sales manager of Yozuri America for an independent testing of their superbraid. It took sometime to test the line and update this article due to hurricanes and life getting in the way.
We put yozuri 15# side by side with ocea ex8 for a “feel” comparison. Yozuri felt like the older suffix performance braid. Felt thicker than the ex8 pe2 which is rated 40#.

the first test on Yozuri yield a 37.9 / 14.5 – mg = 2.61 S/W which indicates it is a good braid. It feels thicker than the ocea ex8 40# but it is thinner considering the mass and definitely stronger. Ocea ex8 is by far way smoother though.

Second test was 36.1 line mass which average out to 14.2 mg/ft which is better than spiderwire stealth camo 15 – the strongest 15# braid we have tested. The Yozuri 15# is also thinner than shimano ocea ex8 pe2/40#.
Yozuri 20# came in at 42.35# ABS and 17.4 mg/ft. SW = 2.43 – the same mass as braid 20# but 8-9# stronger. Line diameter is .292mm.
Yozuri 30# broke at 50.20# with a line mass of 21.6 mg the same as Jbraid 30#, S/W = 2.32 diameter is 0.325mm same as Jbraid 30#.
so far it is a very consistent braid.
Youzri 50# is soft and smooth, it is almost like a different weave. This is due to it being 8 strand. It has 35.5 mg/ft and SW = 2.29, diameter is 0.417mm about the same diameter as JBraid 50# and Jerry Brown 40# solid/hollow but breaks 20# higher.
